Dental implants FAQs

What is a dental implant..?

implantA dental implant is a small titanium screw which you have placed into your bone. The implant acts as a root which supports your crowns, bridges or dentures to replace one or more of your missing teeth.

How long will my implants last..?

With routine check ups and following home care instructions as advised by your dentist, your implants should last your lifetime.

What is the success rate of implants..?

The success rate overall is 98.4% in a healthy person.

How much do dental implants cost..?

Single implants cost approximately £2500 for a simple case and up to £4500 for a complicated case.

At Appledore if you have more than two implants placed at the same time, you , may be offered a discount on the 3rd and subsequent implants. Your treatment will be assessed and you will be given a detailed treatment proposal advising you as to how many implants you need, and the cost involved.

Is there an easy way to pay..?

Providing you are a member of the Appledore Club, we are able to spread the cost of your treatment over 12 months, interest free, this is organised through our finance company.

Is the procedure painful..?

No, it is a very gentle procedure and is carried out under local anaesthetic. You can have sedation if you are nervous.

How long does the procedure take..?

It usually takes about 30 minutes to place an implant.

Will I experience any pain after the procedure..?

You may have some discomfort and swelling for a short period which can be relieved with painkillers which your dentist will prescribe.

How experienced is my dentist in placing implants..?

Teresa Day

Dr Teresa Day our Clinical Director has been placing dental implants since 1984 and has a vast amount of experience in this field. She places around 400 implants every year.

Dr Day also mentors other dentists, helping to train them to place implants.  She is registered as a mentor with ADI - The Association for Dental Implantology.

Dr Day also takes referral cases from other dentists who do not place implants themselves.

How well researched is this technique..?

This technique is well established and accepted throughout the world as a method of restoration and replacement.

How will my dentist know if my implant has worked..?

In the rare case of an implant not integrating with the bone, the implant will have slight movement which your dentist will be able to detect.

What will happen if my implant fails..?

Depending on your circumstances as to why your implant failed, your dentist would replace your implant. This decision would be based on your dentists clinical diagnosis.

Will I have to pay for the implant again..?

This is assessed individually and is entirely up to your dentist.

What benefits are there to having dental implants..?

How can I tell if I am healthy enough to have dental implants..?

If your general health is good, and you are able to undergo surgery for routine bridgework or routine extractions, then you can receive implants.
If you are taking any form of medication you must tell your dentist. There are very few medical conditions that would prevent you from having implants.

Do my implants require special care..?

They need to be treated like your natural teeth and gums, you need a good oral hygiene programme and regular check ups with your hygienist. You will be given full instructions from your dentist on how to look after your final restoration.

How long does my whole implant procedure take..?

3 – 9 months, or thereabouts.
Your dentist will provide a treatment proposal and a more accurate time scale.

Can I have implants on the NHS..?

As a general rule no.

How soon can I return to work after my implant procedure..?

Your dentist will advise you, this depends on each individual. We generally recommend you take the implant day off work, and unless you are having a complicated procedure you can usually work the next day.

If I have no remaining teeth what are my alternatives..?
